Genealogical Societies for Saxony

Regional and Local

Overview

Genealogy or Family History Societies in Germany may be able to assist you with local research problems. They are generally composed of people who are tracing their own families, and as such are amateurs. However they often have a good knowledge of local research facilities, methods and genealogies. Many are older and will not understand English, so be prepared to write and read German in your correspondence with them.

If you have a lot of research in one area, you should join the appropriate society for that area. Usually you will receive a list of members and their research interests, as well as their publications. You can then approach members of like interest and advertise through their pages.

If you have any additions or corrections to this page, please email them to me. They will be greatly appreciated and added to this page.

Regional Societies

The Arbeitsgemeinschaft für mitteldeutsche Familienforschung e.V. (AMF) is a cooperative of genealogical researchers specialising in Middle Germany, which includes Saxony.

They have recently established additional sub-groups specialising in more specific areas of research. The only ones which seem to me to be relevant to Saxony are those for the ancient county of Oberlausitz (no 8), the area around the former Herzogtums Sachsen-Altenburg (no 10), the modern county of Muldentalkreis (no 14) and the Erzgebirge Mountains (no 15).

Local Societies

There are other independent local societies as well, who are worthwhile considering.
