About Me |
| Background I was born a few days before Sputnik 1 was launched. This was the start of the space race and prompted development of the computer network which was to become known as the Internet. I am fortunate to have grown up at a time when popular music was revolutionised by the electric guitar. Rock music is one of the greatest sources of enjoyment in my life. Getting my first stereo record player was an important event in my life. In my early years television broadcasting was in its infancy. I am ambivalent about the impact of TV on my life but it is hard to imagine being without it. The development of the VCR (and later the DVD player) greatly enhanced the value of TV for me. I enjoy being able to watch movies at home. In recent years the Internet has enriched my life. I have set up a personal web site to share my interest in rock music and movies through reviews of my favourite examples. My reviews include cross references between movies and music. I don't give ratings because I only review stuff I like anyway. I do give recommendations. Music The early seventies was the golden age of music for me. In particular I like progressive rock and heavy rock. I became disillusioned with the direction popular music took in the eighties. Slick synthetic digital sounds dominated. Thankfully heavy rock refused to die despite the damage done by hair metal bands. I welcomed the nineties. Bands acknowledged the influence of seventies music and returned to guitar driven rock. Movies I like movies that give me something to think about and movies with well developed characters. Sometimes I enjoy movies that simply look and sound good. Some of my favourite movies are made on a low budget outside the Hollywood mainstream formula. However, I don't like movies with low production standards, such as poor lighting and shaky hand held cameras.
