Ritual de lo Habitual - Jane's Addiction

The nineties was a good decade for rock. Ritual de lo Habitual was an important harbinger. It was released shortly before grunge swept away the debris of the eighties.

The first half of Ritual de lo Habitual consists of standard length songs which use interesting tempo changes and arty lyrics. 'Been Caught Stealing' is one of the catchiest numbers, incorporating barking dogs and immoral lyrics.

The second half of the album is more indulgent but is rewarding. 'Three Days' is the centrepiece of the album and extends over ten minutes. It references the menage a trois depicted on the album cover. This is followed by another lengthy song 'Then She Did.' This song includes atmospheric washes of strings and disjointed tinkling of piano keys. These two songs make the album essential listening.

The next song is a strange inclusion on the album. 'Of Course' features a Middle Eastern sounding fiddle which does not fit in well with the band's sound. The song could have worked as a stylistic variation if it was short. Unfortunately it lasts for over seven minutes and is annoyingly repetitive.

The album ends with 'Classic Girl' which is a welcome return to form. This a love song for Perry Farrell's girlfriend.

The musicianship on Ritual de lo Habitual is of a high standard. Dave Navarro's guitar work is particularly noteworthy. Farrell has an idiosyncratic vocal style which I find irritating at times. However, the song writing is strong and I recommend Ritual de lo Habitual even though the vocals don't appeal to me.

Jane's Addiction broke up after releasing Ritual de lo Habitual and never enjoyed the widespread popular acclaim given to their successors in alternative rock. However, they are acknowledged as a major influence. Farrell instigated the Lollapalooza travelling rock festival. Navarro went on to play guitar with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
