Behind The Face

			The trek up the mountain,
			You see a face.

			You have leaders,
They take you up the path they know best,
Often the only one they know.
Or you can sometimes reach the top by yourself,
			But usually you cannot decipher
What you are supposed to do on reaching the summit.

			And so this time,
You decide to walk all around the top,
But you cannot simply do so -
You must go back down and find a new path up,
Each time, learning much of the terrain on the way .
And each time you reach the top
You see a face once more,
Though it is also different each time,
And never does it seem quite complete.
Maybe all that you have seen
Added up could make a whole,
Yet they seem to be as much as each other,
And that they still would not make up the sum.

			There is always something more,
Something left that cannot be seen.
It is ever as if the face mirrors the path you have taken.
And that not all possibilities are shown on the outside.
			Maybe All is contained within.

So you continue to trek up and down,
			Up and down previous paths
			Until another becomes evident.
Each path throws things at you that test your (self) belief,
And often do you go back to your original path -
The one you know the best...
Each time wondering if you will see
			Beyond The Face.

			But suddenly,
You have a change of heart -
You realise that you have been trying to look
Beyond the face for so long
That you have forgotten to look at the face!
You look again at the face,
And see that there is so much more than you saw before -
			Each time you look harder
			Something more do you see!
			And finally you decide
That there is enough detail and complexity in that face
To last your life in this world -
That there is no need to try and see
			Beyond the face.

The last verse was added after I became a Christian, and I think is a much better way to finish it....
