Charred Heart
I lie here and weep at the finality of your departure,
And at how much of our lives
That have now become nothing but pain.
You shut your eyes and closed your heart on me
Long before I ever closed mine on you.
You shut off my access
To even the farthest edges of your soul -
Without even a thought of how much of me you took with you.
You left me alone while grief slowly devoured my heart.
So desperate was I to have you back -
But you had already decided -
There was no way to get myself back into your heart -
It had already been charred -
An impenetrably rough skin forming on the outside,
Never again to be touched by me.
