Corrections to personal names in the
transcription of the UK 1881 census

Below is a list of corrections to the spelling of the names of people in the UK 1881 census transcription and index. The 'correct' spelling of a name is linked to the Public Record Office reference to the census document that contains the name.

Included in this list are the corrections published on pages 63 and 64 of the June 1999 edition of Family Tree Magazine. These entries can generally be identified because they have no forename(s) and no page number in the PRO reference.

The 3-letter abbreviations of the names of UK counties are as in British Standard BS6879:1987. (These are sometimes different from those used by the Genealogical Society of Utah in the census transcription.)

I welcome further corrections of errors, but will only publish here those that are of the spelling of a person's name. I make no claim about the accuracy of any information published here. The spelling of a name should be that which is in the census document, not what was known or believed to have been used by the person concerned. Do not submit a correction unless you have checked the transcription data against (a copy of) the original census record. Please supply all the details that are shown in this list: surname, forename(s), PRO reference, county, and transcription spelling. N.B.: do not send e-mail messages containing HTML.

A correspondent has informed me that he received a reply from the LDS church in which they stated that they were not going to make any correction to the census transcription database.
